READING are through to round two of the Capital One Cup, after they beat Colchester in extra time in Essex on Tuesday night.
The Championship beat their League One rivals thanks to Chris Gunter's winning goal, as he slotted home Oliver Norwood's pass.
In a lack lustre contest, Nick Blackman went close early on, but was denied by a point blank save from Sam Walker.
Blackman and Danny Williams both had further chances, but after 90 minutes there was still no goals in the contest.
Reading goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi denied Colchester's Alex Gilbey in extra time, before Gunter's late winner.
The Royals will hope to build on this victory when they return to Championship action and entertain Leeds United at home on Sunday (3pm) at the Madejski Stadium.
