AFC ALDERMASTON needed extra-time to beat Reading League side AFC Corinthians and progress to the quarter-finals of the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup.

The Hampshire Premier League outfit made a sluggish start and while they improved as the first half went on, the game remained goal-less at the break.

Corinthians took the lead with around 10 minutes left, scoring with a header from a corner, but Aldermaston responded in the same way soon after, Dan Alliston heading home Karl Hanks’ flag-kick to force extra-time.

Another Hanks corner led to the hosts going ahead in the additional period, Michael Porter heading home, while Kai Parton-Edey rounded the goalkeeper to complete the scoring and send AFC Aldermaston through.

Aldermaston manager Terry Rooney said: “We are pleased to be through but it would have been nice to have had an easier passage. We have a friendly against Finchampstead on Wednesday where I am hoping to look at a few new players.”

Aldermaston’s next competitive game is on Saturday, when they host QK Southampton. Rooney’s men lie 15th in the Hampshire Premier League table, one place above their visitors, making it an important fixture.

“It’s a big game,” Rooney added. “We are doing well in the cups but we want to make an impact in the league as well.

“We need to get points on the board for that bit of stability. We do not want to get dragged into the battle at the bottom of the league.”

Overton United were without a game last week. They sit ninth in the table ahead of a trip to mid-table Liss Athletic on Saturday.
