BASINSTOKE Labour Club turned the form book upside down as they beat Herriard Sports 5-2 to win the Basingstoke B Cup final.

Craig Lewington’s team has gone right through the season in Division Two, taking the Championship trophy after winning 17 of their 18 matches and drawing the other, bit lost this game in front of a crowd of 180.

The Labour team looked the more determined side from the start and Matt Kelly, who was to win the man of the match award for his lively display and a hat-trick.

He had early efforts saved or cleared off the line, before he put his side in front after 32 minutes. Over came a corner from Jack Barlow, it was half cleared and Kelly was on hand to snap up the loose ball.

A collision of heads between Herriard's Sam Cato and James McCallion in the 35tth minute led to the Labour midfielder needing 12 stitches. Labour were well worth their interval lead and then ion 51 minutes, they extended it when Aaron Johns chased a long ball over the top from Gavin Harkness and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Dave Purt.

Four minutes later, the holders staged a comeback when Sam Cato was on the end of a free-kick taken by Matt Goodman and beat Adam Burridge with a low shot.

Just after the hour mark, a good run by Cato down the right flank ended with his perfect cross and Chris Dobbie had the easiest of headers from a Cato cross to level things.

Mark West, the Labour captain and his partner at the back Louis Chambers, had done an excellent job holding the Herriard front men, Cato and Dobbie, who between them had scored 78 goals this season. When Labour had McCallion sent off with a straight red card in the 70th minute for violent conduct things looked black for them, but Purt was beaten by an unstoppable 35 yard strike by Kelly to make it 3-2 five minutes later. Herriard failed to take advantage of Labour's 10 men and then had their captain Stuart Minton sent off for a second booking in a space of a minute.

Seven minutes from time Kelly completed his hat-trick from a pass by Taylor Palmer and in added on time substitute Ibrahim Waheed scored the fifth.

The cup and awards were presented by Graham Bassett, Management Committee member.
