A LONE goal scored by Jay Green was enough to see AFC Berg beat Overton United B to win the Hampshire Junior B Cup last Friday evening at Longmeadow.

Neither side had many clear cut chances, but in the fifth minute Richard McCoubrie for Berg took a free-kick and it drifted just wide of the far post.

McCoubrie with his precise corners and free kick impressed until he had to go off at half time.

Kieran Alleyne also did well out on the right and in the 17th minute a sliced clearance kick from goalkeeper Gavin Alexander gave him an opportunity, but he could not control the ball and shot wide.

Josh Smith fired miles over the bar when he should have done better for Overton, but at the other end Graham Dwyer forced a good save from Alexander and McCoubrie had a certain goal cleared off the line.

It was just before half time when the only goal came.

It was way out on the right, fully 30 yards and Jay Green unchallenged tried a pot shot at goal and it ended up in the far corner giving keeper Alexander no chance.

Overton responded in the second half with some spirited attacks and in the 65th minute a slip by keeper Torren Kirrage gave Warren Clarke a good chance to level, but his curling shot took a deflection and ended up inches wide.

Two minutes later, United looked to have equalised when a fine move up field ended with a great volley from Wat Jones, but the linesman’s flag ruled it out.

At the back for Overton, centre backs Paul Eldridge and Ewan Westwood were very sound, but it was Paul Crowe, the Berg defender who was to receive the man of the match award.

Overton pressed strongly in the final five minutes and was almost rewarded with a minute to go when a cross from a Clarke was met at the far post by Ben Wooton, but ended up in the side netting.

The cup and awards were presented by John Benfield, the Hants FA President.
