AFC BERG blew their chances of promotion from Basingstoke and District League Division Two after losing 4-0 to the champions Herriard Sports.

This came after a great 8-3 win in midweek against their nearest rivals Winklebury Wizards.

Manager Dave Brickwood said: "We just did not perform on Saturday after the outstanding game against Wizards on Wednesday."

Against Winklebury, Ben Clarke opened the scoring after three minutes. Dan Costen levelled with a penalty, but goals from Richard McCoubrie and a Carlos Gonzales penalty gave Berg a 3-1 half-time lead, after Costen missed a Wizards' penalty just before the break.

The goals flowed in the second half, two for Kieran Allayne and Clarke scoring his second, with singles for Lee Neal and Dan Deadman. Dean Scott netted the other two for Wizards.

It was a different story against Herriard Sports as they lost 4-0, as the champions made it it 17 wins out of 18. There only slip up was a 1-1 draw with Overton United B.

Herriard's Martin Bishop, their long serving Hon Secretary who has been with the club for over 50 years and will pick up an FA Services to Football award next month.

It is by far the best season the club has had in its long existence and he praise manager Craig Lewington and the players for their contribution. It was Stuart Minton opening the scoring in the 32nd minutes.

A raid by Karl Buttle down the left, a pass to Chris Dobbie and his cross found Minton with his back to the goal, beating the goalkeeper. Dobbie netted his 44th goal of the season to make it 2-0 after beating the offside trap and finishing well after a 40 yard run.

Neil Minton scored from a penalty spot and Simon Jane added a fourth when he picked up a long clearance from manager Lewington, who was in goal again this week.

It is now in the hands of Winklebury Wizards to win the Runners Up Shield. They need maximum points from their remaining two matches to attain this after beating Origin 4-1 on Saturday. They play Chineham on Saturday and then have to wait until the following Saturday when they meet Longdog Soldiers, both should be comfortable wins judging by the positions both hold in the table.

It was lowly placed Origin they met on Saturday and received a shock when after six minutes they fell behind when Paul Kitchen scored after a goalkeeper Greg Adams was fooled by a long ball over the top.

This followed with Dan Hargood, George Lagden and Scott Large all missed chances, before Large put away a cross from Jay Reed in the 30th minutes. After 52 minutes, a shot from Dan Costen was half cleared to Hargood who put Wizards in front.

Three minutes later, Wizards were awarded a penalty, but this was blazed over by Lagden.

On the hour, a cross from Ryan Watts was netted by Dan Goodyear and within six minutes left, Hargood went on a solo run to complete the scoring.

Overton United B played Twentyten Reserves at Preston Candover last Saturday and returned home with a 4-1 win. It was Twentyten taking the lead after seven minutes when Jack Barrett headed home a Mark Smith's corner. Paul Eldridge took a return pass from Warren Clarke to equalise in the 15th minute and the scores remained level until the 49th minute when Jacob Barlow scored from a Josh Smith assist. Two minutes later Overton went further ahead, Warren Clarke the scorer after good play by Ben Wootton and Eldridge. Then on 68 minutes, Overton went 4-1 up, Richard Budd following up after the goalkeeper pulled off a fine save from the hot shot by Wootton.
