HOOK won their second trophy of the season by beating a strong Rising Sun DC side 2-1 in the final of the Peter Raynbird Cup at Winklebury on Saturday.

Having already won the Basingstoke A Cup, Hook made it a trophy double, with goals from Pete Silvester and Jon Noakes earning them another piece of silverware.

They got off to a strong started well and almost took the led after just three minutes, Silvester forcing a good save from Rising Sun goalkeeper Andy Bennett.

Bennett made another smart save with his feet to deny Aaron King soon after, but he could do nothing to prevent Silvester opening the scoring on 35 minutes.

There seemed to be little danger when Silvester lined up a free-kick on the left wing, but his ball in somehow evaded everyone in the crowded penalty area and ended up in the far corner of the Rising Sun goal.

Andy Haig should have doubled the lead soon after. Dan Mellor’s pass rebounded kindly to him, leaving him with a practically open goal.

He looked sure to hit the net, but his shot crashed against the post and Hook had to settle for a one-goal lead at the half-time interval.

However, they did extend their advantage early in the second half.

James Westwood took a short corner to Dave White, whose cross from the left wing found Noakes.

He made no mistake, with firing a bullet header into the back of the net.

Noakes had been enjoying and excellent game in the Hook midfield, but when he was forced off with an injury, Rising Sun enjoyed their best spell of the game.

When Lorne Howard’s shot was blocked, the loose ball fell to Gordon Birch, but he could only shoot wide.

Ben Nicholls, who had also gone close earlier, did pull a goal back with 12 minutes to go.

Joe Richardson was a constant threat down the right wing during Rising Sun’s rally and his inch-perfect cross found Nicholls, who put a strong header beyond the reach of the otherwise impressive Gre Archer in the Hook goal.

Rising Sun pressed strongly in the final stages, but the Hook defence did their job well, holding out to earn their side a 2-1 win and their second cup of the season.

Silvester was named man of the match, with Vanessa Raynbird presenting the trophies.
