THE final of the North Hants May Cup will be an all-Basingstoke and District Saturday League affair after semi-final wins for Hampshire Irons and TwentyTen.

Irons needed penalties to beat Reading League side Baughurst AFC after neither side was able to score in 90 minutes or extra-time, though James Arnold, Chris Arnold and Kieran Dent all failed to make the most of decent chances.

James Arnold, Chris Dobbie, Simon Head and Rob Mead all scored penalties for Irons, but Steve Tickner saw his effort saved and the shoot-out went to sudden death. Baughurst’s taker shot wide, giving Dent the chance to put Irons through, and he made no mistake.

It was a more straightforward path to the final for TwentyTen, who beat Andover League outfit New Street Swifts 3-1.

Joe Osborne’s cross-shot opened the scoring for TwentyTen and while visiting Swifts levelled the game early in the second half, Joe Hill pounced to put the Basingstoke side back in front after Matt Tamage’s header was parried. Jordon Wainwright completed the scoring on 75 minutes, beating three men before firing home.

Overton United A will meet Kingsclere in the final of the North Hants Junior Cup after beating North Warnborough 5-0.

Matty Wilson opened the scoring after 10 minutes, before turning provider for first Silani Thomas and then Charlie Palmer. John Gurney made it 4-0 after the break, with Thomas then getting his second goal of the game.

Basingstoke Royals moved eight points clear at the top of the Basingstoke and District Saturday League Premier Division with a 2-0 win over title rivals Rising Sun DC.

Steven Price scored twice to maintain Royals’ unbeaten record.

Hook’s title hopes are all but over following a 5-2 defeat away at Tadley Calleva A.

Stephen Burgess had Tadley ahead at half-time, with Andy Johnson doubling the lead just before the hour. Jon Noakes struck the post for Hook, but Simon Penfold found the net to make it 3-0.

Andy Parker pulled one back for Hook from the penalty spot and there were three further goals in added time, Kye Theodore and Luke Walkley scoring for Tadley either side of Noakes’ strike for the visitors.

It's tight at the top of Division Two, with Basingstoke Athletic and Basingstoke Labour Club level on points at the summit.

Athletic beat AFC Aldermaston A 4-1 to make it 10 wins out of 12. Ryan Evans and Dale Bristow scored two each for Athletic, with an own goal providing Aldermaston’s consolation.

Labour Club became the first team to beat Winklebury Wizards, who have impressed during their first season at senior level.

Cameron George scored the only goal of the game after 23 minutes, converting Josh Bundock’s ball over the top. Bundock was unfortunate not to double the lead, hitting the underside of the crossbar, while Labour goalkeeper Sam White made good saves to deny Conner Stratton, Ryan Watts and Josh Dickens.

Bounty United have slipped to third after their game against Sherborne Reserves was postponed. They host Basingstoke Athletic this weekend in what could prove to be a title decider.

Overton United B’s bad run continued as they were beaten 2-0 by Basingstoke United. Jay Butt and Dan Southgate’s goal direct from a corner sealed it for United.

A new-look Preston Candover side featuring three fresh faces held Herriard Sports to a 1-1 draw. Paul Eldridge converted Tom Green’s cross to put Candover ahead, but Herriard piled on the pressure and eventually got their reward with 10 minutes to go, Craig Lewington finding the net.

Lewington went close to winning the game right at the end, but his effort was cleared off the line as Candover held on to pick up a point.
