BASINGSTOKE Athletic beat Bounty United in a seven-goal thriller to claim three vital points in the Basingstoke and District Saturday League Division Two title race.

Matt Button and Dave Trevelion had Athletic two goals up early on, but Matt Love reduced the lead to a single goal before half-time.

Dale Bristow and Trevelion’s second of the match seemed to have Athletic in control at 4-1. Brad Neal’s strike and a Craig Williamson penalty set up a tense finale, but Athletic held on to claim three points from this top-of-the-table clash.

Struggling AFC Berg claimed their first league win of the season in fine style, beating Herriard Sports 8-0 to move off the bottom of the table.

Goals from Kevin Beaumont, Kieran Allane and Shane West had Berg three goals ahead at the break, while new signing Richard McCoubrie scored four times in the second half, with an own goal completing the scoring. Herriard had a great chance to get on the scoresheet when they were awarded a penalty, but Craig Hind hit the crossbar.

There was another surprise at Berrydown, where struggling Overton United B held unbeaten Winklebury Wizards 1-1.

Overton took the lead through Hayden Chalker just before half-time, but Winklebury piled on the pressure in the second half and levelled on the hour, Matt Lowe finding the net from 20 yards. Both sides ended the game with 10 men, Wizards losing a man to a red card and Overton reduced due to injury, but there was no further scoring.

Preston Candover ended a run of four straight defeats with a 2-1 win over Basingstoke United. Dan Trump scored from the penalty spot, having been brought down himself, to put Candover ahead in the first half and while Tom Hartley levelled for United on 70 minutes, they then had Ashley Williams sent off. Kyle Buckland made the 10 men pay, scoring the winner.

Sherborne St John Reserves sunk to the bottom of the table after losing 6-1 to AFC Aldermaston A.

Kevin Flain and Jon Rooney both scored twice for the winners, with Mark James and Andy Barfoot also finding the net. Ben Harman got Sherborne’s lone reply.
