BASINGSTOKE Royals made a fruitless trip to the Isle of Wight on Saturday, losing their Hampshire A Cup tie at Ryde Saints after a penalty shoot-out.

Visiting Royals went ahead on the half-hour through Matty Dean, but the home side levelled before half-time.

Ryde missed a penalty early in the second half, but they took the lead on the hour.

Royals hit back well and levelled with 10 minutes to go, Steve Stansbridge finding the net after Scott Harvey’s free-kick was parried by the goalkeeper.

The game ended 2-2 and was decided by a penalty shoot-out, which did not go well for Royals.

Steve Price found the net but Ryan Tubb, Dean and Steve Harvey all failed to convert from the spot as Ryde won 3-1 on penalties.

The Hampshire A Cup tie between Sherborne St John and Kingsclere and the Hampshire B Cup quarter-final between Basingstoke Athletic and Hartley Wintney A were both postponed due to waterlogged pitches.
