HERRIARD produced a major shock in the second round of the North Hants May Cup on Saturday, beating visiting Basingstoke Athletic 5-4 after extra-time.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council called off all play on their pitches on Friday morning with games at Aldermaston and Sherborne St John also falling victim to the wet weather.

Herriard got their game on and were rewarded with a surprise victory over Basingstoke Athletic, considered by many to be among the cup favourites.

Roman Vanic put Athletic ahead after five minutes, but Martin Miles levelled 15 minutes later. Nathan Read’s penalty restored the visitors’ lead, but Miles had Herriard level early in the second half.

The pattern was repeated a third time as Dale Bristow’s strike was cancelled out by Karl Buttle to force extra-time, but it was Herriard who went ahead in the extra period, Stuart Minton finding the net from distance.

Sam Patterson levelled the game at 4-4 and while Ryan Evans twice hit the woodwork for Athletic, it was Miles who won the game with his hat-trick goal.

Matt Love and Mitchell Stokes both hit hat-tricks as Bounty United beat visiting Winklebury Wizards 6-4.

Stokes scored two and Love one as the hosts led 3-1 at the break, with Robson Peiaira netting for Winklebury. Hugo Carlos made it 3-2, while Love and Scotty Winterbourne then traded two goals apiece to take the score on to 5-4, before Stokes completed his hat-trick, and the scoring.

AFC Berg were beaten 9-2 away at Wolversdene, Kieran Allayne and Spencer Charlton netting for the visitors.
