JUST one of the three Basingstoke and District Saturday League teams in Hampshire Junior B Cup action was able to reach the third round.

Basingstoke Athletic made it through with a 4-2 victory over visiting AFC Wootton. Tobie Hyde and Dale Bristow both scored twice and while the visitors enjoyed a late rally, scoring twice, the result was never really in doubt. Athletic will host Hyde Aztecs in the quarter finals.

Winklebury Wizards suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 2-1 to visitors Bembridge Reserves from the Isle of Wight. The hosts trailed by a single goal at the break and while substitute Robson Peibira levelled early in the second half, Bembridge were able to regain the lead. Winklebury went close to equalising with 10 minutes to go, when Daniel Goodyear hit the post.

Herriard Sports were also beaten, going down 4-2 to visiting Crofton Saints. Herriard went behind early on and while Craig Lewington levelled, the visitors scored again to lead 2-1 at half-time.

Crofton got a third after the break and while Lewington’s second reduced the deficit, Herriard were unable to get on terms and conceded another in the closing stages.

In the Peter Raynbird Cup, DJS Telecoms staged a remarkable recovery to beat Basingstoke United in the second preliminary round.

Goals from Ash Pearce, Ryan Bennett and Tom Hartley had United three goals up, but Allan Morgan and a brace from substitute Lee Neal levelled the game. The match looked to be heading for extra-time, but Shaun Blackman fired home a late free-kick to break United hearts.
