THERE were a couple of surprises in the Basingstoke Junior A Cup on Saturday, with Basingstoke and District Saturday League Division One outfits DJS Telecoms and TwentyTen beating Premier Division opposition.

A late strike from Carlos Gonzales gave DJS a 3-2 victory over hosts Sherborne St John. They took the lead in the first minute through Alex Izzo, but after Gonzales had hit the crossbar, Ashley Elward levelled before half-time.

Declan Shuttleworth hit the bar for Sherborne after the break but Izzo’s second had them in front. However, Elward’s free-kick made it 2-2 and Gonzales got the winner from another free-kick with eight minutes left.

TwentyTen needed a penalty shoot-out to get the better of hosts Tadley Calleva A. The lower league visitors went ahead through Franklin Spacagna in the first half, but Ashley Saunders levelled for Tadley.

The scores were level at 4-4 after five penalties each, and while Dave Baker scored TwentyTen’s sixth, goalkeeper Harvey Woods saved the next Tadley kick to send his side through.

However, the game is under investigation as the scheduled extra-time did not take place.

Rising Sun DC were comfortable 6-2 winners over Hampshire Irons. Jon Nicholls bagged a hat-trick, while Gordon Birch, Ben Vine and Lorne Howard also hit the net.

Tom Chant and James Arnold scored for Irons.

North Warnborough took an early lead at home to Bramley United, thanks to a Ryan Thorpe penalty. Sam Cato levelled for Bramley, and further goals from Stuart Leddy and Cato’s second had them 3-1 up.

George Mapp pulled one back before the break, but Aaron Burt and Cato’s hat-trick goal had Bramley 5-2 ahead. Lex Burns reduced the deficit again, but Cato’s fourth sealed a 6-3 victory.

Basingstoke Royals saw off the challenge of Division One leaders Overton United A, James Gilham scoring the only goal of the game after 70 minutes.
