BASINGSTOKE Town suffered defeat for the third successive game, losing 2-1 in their Blue Square South clash with Chelmsford City.

Ricky Holmes opened the scoring for the visitors after 20 minutes at the Camrose on Saturday, finding the top corner with a well-struck effort from the edge of the area.

A Bertie Brayley header doubled the lead after 35 minutes but Basingstoke found an almost instant response, James Faulkner heading into an empty net after his initial effort from Sido Jombarti's clever pass was saved.

Faulkner had the chance to level an open match from the penalty spot six minutes into the second half but saw his kick tipped on to the bar by Chelmsford goalkeeper Danny Gay.
