BASINGSTOKE Town held league leaders Lewes to a creditable 1-1 draw in their Blue Square South clash at the Camrose on Saturday.
Scott Fitzgerald got the only goal of a scrappy opening period, taking advantage of a failed clearance to produce a clever turn and shot from the edge of the area on 24 minutes.
Lewes equalised through Paul Groves 68 minutes in, the striker forcing the ball home on the rebound after his initial effort had been blocked.
The table-toppers pressed hard for a winner but it was Basingstoke who came closest to claiming all three points, James Taylor hitting the crossbar after turning well in the area.
