By John Boyman »

Full-time - Farnborough 1 Basingstoke Town 0

A terrible way to lose for Town, with the goal coming seconds before the final whistle. A very open game and the visitors will be wondering what could have been, but Farnborough had the better of the second half and got the vital goal.

See The Monday Gazette for a full report and all of the reaction.

Farnborough goal - McAuley gives away a needless free-kick just outside the area as Town look to break. Page's initial effort smacks into the wall but it comes back to the same player and he smashes a volley through a crowd of players and into the net.

90+1 min - And that's another terrible miss by Bennett. He looks certain to score as a free-kick reaches him no more than three yards out at the back post by somehow heads wide.

86 min - Jay Gasson almost sells Bayes short with a header back, the 'keeper just getting to the ball before Connolly.

84 min - Town break through Sam-Yorke and his pull-back results in Smart having a shot from the edge of the area brilliantly saved.

83 min - A poor back-header by Lake puts Town in trouble but Bennett's shot is deflected wide.

81 min - Farnborough bring on a second striker in Ola Sogbanmu for right-back Nathan Webb.

79 min - Stuart Lake is booked after having a few words too many with referee Ian Crouch.

78 min - A good move leads to McAuley putting a low cross across the face of goal, with Sam-Yorke just unable to make contact at the near post.

75 min - Town make their first change, replacing Sole with Simon Dunn.

74 min - Good work down the right by McAuley and his cross narrowly evades Sole at the far post.

70 min - That's a contender for miss of the season by Farnborough's Daniel Bennett, who found himself unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box and had time to take a touch but still put his shot over the bar.

66 min - Sole has time to steady himself on the edge of the area after a corner is only half-cleared - but his shot fizzes wide.

63 min - Good work by Sam-Yorke down the Town right almost leads to a chance at the back post, but it is nicked away from Sole by a defender.

62 min - Town are almost exposed at the back but Nathan Smart does well to put pressure on Connolly, who shoots over. Farnborough replace Orlando Jeffrey with Marcus Moody.

54 min - McAuley works space for a shot but his effort from inside the area is comfortably over the bar.

50 min - MacDonald does well to make a tackle when a Farnborough playes latches onto a clearance. Adam Bygrave's near post header from the resulting corner flashes across goal and narrowly wide.

46 min - Farnborough restart the match. Neither side has made any changes at the break.

Half-time - Farnborough 0 Basingstoke Town 0

Town probably had the better of the half in terms of possession and territory but could not find a way through, while the hosts improved as the game went on.

45+2 min - A great crossfield ball looks to have put Sole in but the on-loan forward takes a touch or two too many and is tackled before he can get a shot away.

45 min - The ball breaks to Phillip Page in the Town box and he smashes in a low shot that takes a deflection and is hacked clear.

43 min - Ashley Winn gets a shot in from distance but it's a comfortable stop for Bayes in the Town goal.

30 min - Sole's corner is almost headed in by Angus MacDonald, his header just clipping a defender to go over. The centre-back should have done better seconds later though, heading wide with the goal at his mercy after getting on the end of Little's cross.

25 min - A neat one-two leads to the best chance of the match so far for Farnborough's Reece Connolly - but he blasts badly over from 10 yards.

23 min - Sole has an appeal for a penalty waved away after a tussle in the area. It would have been soft.

22 min - Toby Little gives the ball away as Town attack and Farnborough are allowed to break quickly. Daniel Bennett gets in behind but the flag is up for offside.

19 min - Sam-Yorke is given time and space to turn on the edge of the area before putting in a floating shot that only just clears the bar.

16 min - Jordan Parkes records Farnborough's first shot of the match but his effort from the edge of the area is straight down the throat of Ashley Bayes.

14 min - A good move results in Sam-Yorke showing good feet inside the area before his cross/shot is blocked by home 'keeper Tom Lovelock.

10 min - Nathan Smart's cross almost leads to a chance for Delano Sam-Yorke but his touch just lets him down as he attempts to turn in the six-yard box.

6 min - A throw leads to the first shot of the match for Shaun McAuley but his effort is deflected wide.

1 min - Town get the game under way, shooting towards the half-completed Prospect Road End in the first half.

Team news - Basingstoke have signed Woking forward Giuseppe Sole on a one-month loan and he makes his debut. Town needed an extra body as both Wes Daly and David Pratt are suspended, while Tim Sills has failed to recover from a knee injury.

Rob Gradwell leads the line in attack, while Robert Rice looks set to play in midfield.

Town: Bayes, Smart, Little, MacDonald, Gasson, Lake, Rice, McAuley, Gradwell, Sam-Yorke, Sole. Subs: Ogunbote, Dunn, Rouga, Bondon, Morris.
