WHITCHURCH picked up their first piece of silverware this season as they won the Dango Tournament for the second time in three seasons at Andover New Street last Saturday.

They beat Newbury 3-1 in the final after going a goal down in the first half after ’Church stopped for what they thought was a penalty, only to be hit with a quick break and excellent strike.

After the break, Whitchurch made no mistake as George Dallarda scored with a nice top corner strike and then Sam Hamilton set-up Alex Dockree for the second.

After Louis Macey and Dallarda had both gone close, Luke Walker wrapped up the victory.

To reach the final, Whitchurch beat a Thatcham side made up mostly of reserves last Thursday after a penalty shoot-out.

’Church had a lot of chances in the first half but Walker, Dallarda and Nicky Jupp were unable to find the net.

Thatcham then took the lead, but Paul Coventry came off the bench to level things and send the game straight into a shoot-out.

With penalty shot stopping expert Tom Hindmarsh in goal for Whitchurch they started as favourites and he did not disappoint, saving three of the six kicks, including the last one to give them victory after Macey converted the winners’ fourth.

After the triumph, manager Jim Macey said: “It was nice to pick up our first piece of silverware and I was very pleased with the way both games went.”
