Holder-Spooner makes great start to life at the Camrose
1:00pm Monday 23rd July 2012 in Football
SKILFUL forward Jordace Holder-Spooner made the perfect start to life as a Basingstoke Town player, firing in a hat-trick on his first appearance for the club.
The 19-year-old was only on the field for 45 minutes but found the net three times as Town brushed aside a young Reading team at the Camrose on Saturday, Tim Sills and Delano Sam-Yorke also getting on the scoresheet in a 5-0 win.
It was a fine performance all round for the hosts, who worked hard, looked strong in defence, passed the ball well and were clinical in front of goal.
However, it was undoubtedly Holder-Spooner who stole the show – and Basingstoke assistant manager Kevin Braybrook is excited about the impact that the former Southamp-ton youngster could have on the team.
“I have known Jordace since he was 13,” Braybrook explained. “I signed him for Southamp- ton and coached him there so I know that he has got a lot about him and can change games.
“He is an exciting player, with plenty of pace and power. He has played a lot out wide but we think he can play down the middle because he is dangerous and exciting, which he showed today.
“He certainly gives us more options going forward. Tim Sills and Delano Sam-Yorke played a lot last season but Jordace and Stefan Brown give us different options.”
Town manager Jason Bristow missed the game due to a UEFA A Coaching Licence course – but Braybrook was pleased with the team’s first pre-season outing. “It was a good start,” he said. “I thought we approached the game with the right mentality. We worked hard and passed the ball well when we could.
“There were good performances from some of the new guys and a good mentality in the group so I am delighted.”
Town are in friendly action again tomorrow night, when they make the short trip to Southern League outfit Winchester City (kick-off 7.45pm). See The Monday Gazette for a full report and more pictures from Saturday’s game.
