Pupils given a chance to show off their skills

PUPILS from three special schools took part in a football skills festival held on the newly refurbished artificial turf courts at the Camrose.

Basingstoke Town’s football in the community head coach, Matt Beckingham carried out curriculum sessions with pupils from Saxon Wood, Limington House and Maple Ridge Schools after receiving funding from Hampshire County Council.

The festival was the culmination of this, with the children showing off the skills they had learned during the sessions.

Beckingham, who ran the festival alongside the club’s NVQ students, said: “We did a lot of work on skills and this just gave the kids a chance to show off what they had learned. They also had a match at the end of the session and seemed to really enjoy it.

“The teachers also gave us good feedback throughout the course and we are hoping to get some more funding to keep bringing the kids down to the new courts and keep the scheme going.”

Beckingham is looking at setting up adult disability team in future, with children from the schools eventually feeding into it.
