Record entry for Town Colts’ soccer sixes

A RECORD entry of 171 teams - 25 per cent up on last year - contested Basingstoke Town Colts' annual six-a-side soccer tournament at their Linde Materials Handling sports ground at Water End.

Teams travelled from Kent, London, Sussex, Nottinghamshire, Wiltshire and the West Midlands for the two-day festival.

Tournament manager Kevin Brewer said: "Although the weather was a definite bonus, the stars were undoubtedly the players themselves, who contributed to a weekend of superb entertainment.

"A particularly strong girls' section saw 42 teams battle it out across the four age groups.

"We're very fortunate in being so well supported by clubs in our local Peter Houseman and North East Hants leagues. In recent years we have attracted clubs from further afield in an attempt to introduce greater variety and an element of surprise.

"Judging by the number of people remarking on the high standard of football throughout the event, this is proving to be a successful formula.

"Equally, it's great to see that the local teams are holding their own against ever-stronger opposition."

Under-seven and under-eight boys played in non-competitive groups and every player was awarded a medal.

Winners and runners up in the other age groups were:
Under-nine boys: Aldershot Boys, Sutton Juniors; under-10 boys: Shaw (Swindon), Sherborne St John; under-11 boys: Winklebury Wizards, Ashford Town; under-12 boys: Tadley Calleva, Camberley Boys; under-13 boys: Basingstoke Town Colts, Thatcham Town Harriers; under-14 boys: Bilbrook Juniors (Wolverhampton), Loddon Sports; under-15 boys: Thamesbank Dynamos (Fulham), Basingstoke Town Colts; under-16 boys: FC Fernhill, Chineham Tigers.
Under-12 girls: Denham United Ladies, Michelmersh & Timsbury; under-14 girls: Southampton Saints, Knaphill Wanderers; under-15 girls: Denham United Ladies, Brighton & Hove Albion; under-17 girls: Riverside Strikers, Rise Park Ladies (Nottingham).
