BASINGSTOKE Town were unable to match Blue Square South leaders Newport County at the Camrose on Tuesday, going down 5-1 to the champions elect.
Danny Rose gave the Welsh side the perfect start, scoring twice in the first 14 minutes and Stuart Douglas bundled the ball home after a scramble to extend the lead further six minutes before the break.
Town grabbed a lifeline two minutes later, Robert Rice converting from the penalty spot after Martyn Giles was harshly penalised for handball.
Sam Foley got Newport back on track, making it 4-1 four minutes into the second half, and Giles completed the scoring in the closing stages.
