Wanderer Rice finds home at Camrose

BASINGSTOKE Town manager Frank Gray has taken a big step towards finalising his squad for the coming season by signing two new players.

Robert Rice and Matt Finlay are the latest players to have joined the club ahead of the 2009/10 season.

Rice, who is 20, is a right-back who has signed a one-year deal at the Camrose after being released by Wycombe. He began his career at Fulham before moving to Buckinghamshire in 2007, making his league debut as a substitute towards the end of the 2007/08 season.

He made two further substitute appearances last season before making his full debut in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Finlay, who is 19, is a left-sided midfielder who has agreed non-contract terms at Basingstoke after spending last season at Southern Premier outfit Bashley, scoring two goals in 37 league appearances.

He began his career at AFC Bournmouth before a spell at Salisbury City and moved to Bashley last summer.

Gray had been hoping to sign two new players before going away on holiday for a fortnight and will be delighted to have got both Rice and Finlay on board.

The club have also announced that Ryman League outfit Sutton United will provide their first pre-season opposition when they visit the Camrose on July 11 (kick-off 3pm).

There has been a lot of interest in Basingstoke’s friendly with a Portsmouth XI, which will take place at the Camrose on July 25.

As a result, tickets are to be sold in advance at a reduced price of £9 for adults, £5 concessions and £2 children. These tickets are available to buy in the clubhouse at the Camrose between noon and 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays and in the office between 10am and noon Tuesday to Friday.
