BASINGSTOKE Town cruised into the quarter finals of the Hampshire Senior Cup with a comfortable 5-0 win over Winchester City at the Camrose on Tuesday night.

Ben Wells opened the scoring at the end of what had been a poor first half, slotting the ball home from the edge of the area following some good play by James Taylor.

Scott Fitzgerald doubled the lead just after the hour mark, latching on to Wells' delicate ball over the defence before rounding Winchester 'keeper Clint Davies and keeping his composure to fire past two men on the line.

The third goal came after 68 minutes, Fitzgerald poking the ball home from close range after Davies dropped David Tarpey's cross at his feet.

Taylor got the next 10 minutes later, controlling a Fitzgerald flick-on before firing home from 12 yards.

Tarpey completed the rout seconds later, picking the ball up midway inside the Winchester half, beating a man and coolly steering the ball into the corner.

See Thursday's Gazette for a full report.
