Newport County 2 Basingstoke Town 0.
DESPITE playing some decent football and creating a number of chances, Basingstoke Town suffered their second defeat of the season at the Newport Stadium on Monday afternoon.
First half goals from Jason Bowen and Nathan Davies proved enough to earn the Welsh side victory, though Town came close to scoring on a number of occasions.
Newport took the lead in the seventh minute following a nice move down the right channel. Bowen found striker Charlie Griffin in behind Basingstoke's back line and the striker took the ball around Town keeper Jonty Venter. His low shot was blocked on the line by Jason Bristow but Bowen was on hand to smash home the rebound from close range.
Town twice came close to levelling the match, Ben Wells hitting the crossbar and Bristow having a header cleared off the line, before Davies volleyed home from just inside the area to put the home side two goals up after 33 minutes.
Bristow saw another headed effort cleared off the line just before the break and while Basingstoke had much of the play in the second half, they rarely threatened the Newport goal.
