BASINGSTOKE Town’s awful away league record continued, as they lost 2-0 at Bishop’s Stortford.

The Dragons have now won just once in seven outings away from the Camrose this season and their latest defeat saw them slip to 11th in the Southern League Premier Division table.

Basingstoke manager Terry Brown made three changes to the side which beat Banbury last week, with George Bennett, Dan Collier and Ashleigh Artwell all coming into the starting XI, while Callum Bunting, Tim Wohlfiel and Michael Atkinson were relegated to the subs bench, Bishop’s Stortford had the first chance of the game, but Dipo Akinyemi hooked his shot wide of the target.

However, the same Blues player did test Basingstoke’s goalkeeper Colm McAdden soon after.

The Dragons then so nearly opened the scoring, but Sam Argent saw his effort hit the post with the home goalkeeper well beaten.

The home side opened the scoring on 24 minutes, thanks to a close-range effort from Freddy Moncur.

Soon after, the goal scorer and Sam Hatton combined and Akinyemi forced a save from McAdden.

As the half came to a close, Basingstoke had two great chances to equalise with Argent denied by a good block.

Home goalie Tyler McCarthy then produced a great save, as he pushed away a Ben Wright header from George Bennett’s cross.

For the start of the second half, Town boss Brown made two changes with Bunting and Atkinson coming on to replace Wright and Artwell.

The first chance after the break fell to the visitors, but Sam Smart headed wide from another Bennett cross.

On 67 minutes, the home side doubled their lead as Akinyemi was given time in the box to pick his spot.

The Blues then had a shout for a penalty turned down after Town sub Guri Demuria bundled down Foxley.

The home side tried to add a third goal with sub Ryan Richefond going wide from 20 yards and Foxley hitting the top of the bar, while Town’s Charlie Kennedy shot wide.

Town will now hope to snap their awful away run, when they travel to Frome on Saturday for their next league game.
