HARTLEY Wintney moved up to second in the Southern League Division One after a 2-1 win at fourth placed Egham.

The first minute saw a really bad challenge by Egham forward Daniel Julianne on Adam New.

The young defender carried on playing but with a limp and Julianne was lucky to escape without any form of card, as the referee deeming a word was sufficient.

Hartley controlled the early play with Paul Hodges bursts of pace causing the home defence problems.

However, it was the Sarnies who had the first chance on 10 minutes when an intelligent run by Brendan Matthews from a breakaway ended with his parting shot well saved by Paul Strudley in the Hartley goal.

The Row opened the scoring on 19 minutes, following a good flowing move.

A long pass from defence saw Sam Argent flick on to James Tennant.

The winger provided a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Paul Hodges who shot low past the advancing home keeper Patrick Ohman.

Things almost got better for Hartley two minutes later when a lob from 20 yards by Hodges landed on the top of the net.

On 26 minutes a free-kick from Tennant found the head of Argent who headed narrowly over.

A minute later, Argent sent Jake Baxter through but Ohman produced a good stop from the parting low shot.

Egham responded and a cross from the left from Ryan Phillips took a deflection and Strudley had to be alert to save. On 43 minutes another heavy challenge on New, who had played well, ended his match and he was replaced by Liam Eagle.

The half ended with Hodges cleverly setting up Tennant whose shot was well saved by Ohman. The Sarnies started the second half strongly and on 49 minutes Ryan Debattista created a chance for himself on the edge of the box.

His low drive was parried by Strudley and the Row defence cleared.

Four minutes later, Egham were awarded a free-kick on the 18 yard line.

Louis Stead took the kick which beat the wall but Strudley brought off a good save at the post.

On 59 minutes after more home pressure a corner from Ryan Phillips was headed narrowly over by Mitchell Wiseman.

Hartley responded and on 63 minutes a good run from Hodges saw his parting shot deflected for a corner on the right.

The Sarnies defence managed to clear the corner initially but when the ball was returned the home defence were unable to clear their lines and Liam Eagle slammed the ball home from 10 yards.

On 78 minutes good build up play between Jack French and Argent created a chance for Hodges.

The striker was unable to get sufficient power in his shot and Ohman saved.

In the first minute of added time a powerful run down the left wing by Steven Duff saw a low cross across the face of the goal which was just missed by Argent.

After four minutes of added time the home side managed to win a few challenges on the edge of the Row box and the ball was fed through to Matthews who fired home a deserved consolation goal.
