BASINGSTOKE Town are set to leave the Camrose their home for over 70 years, but no exact date has been fixed yet.

This was the latest announcement to be made by the Interim Management Group (IMG) for Basingstoke Town FC, who are planning the future of the club, after chairman Rafi Razzak quits in May.

In January, the IMG announced they would start the move to community ownership for the club, but before this can happen they need to ascertain where Basingstoke Town will be playing.

Staying at the Camrose, in its current form, is not an option.

The ground has seen little investment in recent years, due to Razzak’s plans to relocate the club to a brand new stadium - which failed last year.

The Camrose is now out of date and cannot conform to modern standards without substantial new investment.

One option reviewed by the IMG was a scheme to raise money by redeveloping part of the ground and simply moving the pitch. This had the advantage of keeping the club at the Camrose.

But after careful consideration this option has been rejected, as it created operating problems, which failed to provide enough money to help relocate the pitch and stands, upgrade facilities to modern requirements, and clear the clubs debts.

As a result, the IMG has confirmed that Basingstoke Town will need to move from the Camrose, where they have been playing since 1945.

The IMG is now focussing on just two potential outcomes.

A move to a greenfield site with the development of a brand new stadium or a move to an existing ground which has the potential to be upgraded to meet the club’s needs.

The key to which one they take is dependent on how much money can be generated from the redevelopment of the Camrose site for other purposes.

David Knight, the club's CEO said: “I would please ask the fans to be patient, there are a lot of meetings going on and people are working hard on this. Once we have some firm details on where we will be playing, we will let everyone know.”

It is hoped to have a final decision on the preferred long-term solution during March.

The Basingstoke Town fans' forum scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed and will be held later next month.
