HARTLEY Wintney lost by the odd goal in seven at Spelthorne Sports as they were knocked out of the FA Cup in the Extra Preliminary Round.

The Row started brightly and had the first chance on seven minutes. Ross Cook was fouled on the edge of the penalty box. From the resulting freekick the same player fired just wide.

On 13 minutes, Hartley pressure saw a Sam Argent shot hit the post. The ball rebounded onto the unsuspecting Dane Buss Spelly goalkeeper’s head and bounced past the post.

From the resulting corner from Dean Stow, Argent rose at the back post to head Hartley into the lead.

On 16 minutes Olu Akinsaya made good progress down the right for Spelthorne and forced a corner. The accurate flag kick was headed home unchallenged by Lee Staples at the back post.

Spelly almost took the lead on 22 minutes, when Akinsaya had a good run down the right beating two Hartley defenders.

His cross was only partially cleared and Jake Flatman’s shot was just past the post.

With play moving from end-to-end Hartley almost took the lead on 27 minutes.

A throw in from Adam Everiss was flicked on by Liam Eagle and Argent’s header was forced on the crossbar and over by Buss.

The home goalkeeper was called into action a few minutes later to make a good stop from Cook.

However Cook was not to be denied. A long kick from goalkeeper Craig Bradshaw saw Cook outpace the last defender and fire into the net past the advancing keeper to make it 2-1.

Five minutes later, Cook almost increased the Hartley lead when his header from a Steve Laidler cross went just past the post.

Hartley had the first chance of the second half on 55 minutes when Argent played in Cook and his shot was just over.

Spelly had a period of pressure and were rewarded when Akinsaya saw his shot from the edge of the box take a deflection on its way into the net. A minute later Akinsaya was unlucky when his shot went just past the post. Spelthorne had a five minute period of continuous pressure but were unable to trouble Bradshaw in the Hartley goal.

Against the run of play the Row regained then lead. Good midfield play from Laidler found Cook who laid the ball into the path of Stow. Stow took a touch before shooting high into the net.

Hartley regained the initiative and appeared on course to progress into the next round.

However on 89 minutes the home side drew level. Ahmed Farah tried a speculative low shot from around 30 yards.

Bradshaw seemed to have the shot well covered, but somehow the ball squirmed beyond him and into the net Buoyed by the goal Spelly pushed forward and were rewarded on the third minute of added time.

Tommy Mooney picked the ball up just inside the Hartley half and ran through the centre of the visitors defence beating two defenders before calmly shooting past Bradshaw for the winner.

Joint manager Daniel Brownlie said: "We played some great football in the opening exchanges, perhaps at times we overplayed.

"After controlling the first half it was important that after the break that we raised but it never happened. Scoring three goals away from home but to not come away as winners is extremely disappointing.

He added: "That result will have hurt the boys there's no question about that, but there's now a guarantee that they'll be fully focused and committed to putting it right when we kick off our league campaign on Tuesday evening at Farnham."
