BASINGSTOKE Town now know they will have to win their final four games if they are to stand any chance of avoiding relegation from National League South and even then it will probably not be enough.

This was after they drew their latest game 2-2 with visiting Weston-super-Mare at the Camrose.

The Dragons had hoped to avenge a 2-0 defeat in Somerset on Tuesday night and it looked on the cards when the home side led 2-0 at the break.

However, the visitors dominated the final 45 minutes and in the end deserved at least a point from the game.

Town boss Terry Brown made four changes to the side which lost at Weston, as Dan Lincoln, David Ray, Guri Demuria and Chris Flood all returned to the starting XI as Rob Rice, Jay Gasson, Manny Williams and Aaron Howe dropped to the bench.

Town opened the scoring in the sixth minute, with what was their first real attack of the game.

A superb cross by Nathan Smart was met at the back post by an excellent header from Flood.

Soon after, Louie Soares shot wide and Liam Enver-Marum then forced the Weston goalkeeper Luke Purnell into a save.

The visitors who passed the ball around well, hit back as Tristan Plummer’s diagonal ball into the area saw Jake Mawford fire wide.

Town made the most of the let off and doubled their advantage as a long free-kick from Dan Lincoln was not dealt with and found its way to Flood by the byline.

He laid the ball back to his fellow striker Enver-Marum, who hammered the ball home after 28 minutes.

Soon after, the home side could have had a third, but Soares headed just wide from Flood.

In the final minute of the half, Weston’s Scott Wilson fired inches past the post as Town headed to the dressing room leading 2-0.

After the interval and now with the wind advantage, the visitors started to dominate, but were unable to find an end product.

However, this was to change as with Jack Deaman, Town’s best-header injured, Weston made the most of it, as Dayle Grubb’s corner was headed in by Ollie Barnes at the back post.

This certainly gave the visitors a lift and on 77 minutes a clumsy challenge by Nathan Smart on Plummer, saw Weston awarded a penalty, which Wilson dispatched into the roof of the net to make it 2-2.

From this point on it looked like the visitors would steal all three points.

Sub Jason Pope had a glorious chance, but fired over and then Wilson forced Lincoln into a save in the final minute.

After the game, Town boss Brown said: “I was delighted with the first half as the players carried out my instructions to the letter and we came in 2-0 up. In the second half against the wind our ball retention early on was awful and we ended up playing far too deep.

“We were a bit unfortunate with their first goal as we had lost our best header of the ball and their best header scored. These things happen, but I had no arguments with the penalty.”

Town are next in action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Gosport Borough for a league game.

Brown will once again shuffle his line-up as he takes a look at all the players at the club.

The following day the Town manager will once again cast his eye over Basingstoke’s under-21 side.
