BASINGSTOKE Town slipped to the bottom of the National League South table despite claiming a point from their trip to high-flying Bath City this afternoon.

The 0-0 draw in Somerset extends Town's winless run to 12 league games and saw them sent to the foot of the table due to Weston-super-Mare's 2-0 victory at Margate.

Basingstoke are four points below the safety line, but are now four games unbeaten, having claimed their second clean sheet of the season against a Bath side who sit fourth in the table.

Today's game at Twerton Park was an attritional affair, with the two teams largely cancelling one another out during a low-key first half.

Ashley Kington went closest to breaking the deadlock for the visitors before the break, cutting in from the wing and firing in a pair of shots, but neither really threatened to beat Aaron Howe in the Town goal.

Basingstoke, who fielded the same team that had beaten Slough Town in the FA Cup seven days earlier, worked hard, with Shaun McAuley and Chris Flood catching the eye, but failed to create anything of note before half-time.

Howe was called into action again after the break, diving to keep out a shot that may just have been going wide of the post, but Town, who defended well throughout, enjoyed more possession and carved out the two best chances of the match in the closing stages.

The first fell to substitute Liam Enver-Marum, but Tom Bird's low cross took a horrible bobble just before it reached him and the forward was unable to get the ball under control.

Centre-back David Ray also went close, just failing to get a touch on the loose ball as it bounced around in the six-yard-box after Bath goalkeeper Steve Phillips had flapped at a McAuley cross.
