Jose Fonte has welcomed the arrival of Steven Caulker and believes the club are in a “good place” ahead of the new season.

Fonte will this evening captain Saints as they open their Europa League qualification campaign against Vitesse at St Mary’s.

It marks the start of an exciting season for the club, as they follow up their seventh place Premier League finish in the last campaign.

Despite the departures of Morgan Schneiderlin and Nathaniel Clyne, and Toby Alderweireld’s decision not to return to the club, Fonte believes Saints are in a great position to challenge on several fronts.

“First we didn’t let as many players leave as last season which is very important,” said the Portuguese international defender.

“We lost quality players but the replacements were the same quality.

“We are in a good place, everybody knows each other.

“The new guys showed already they have a lot of quality so I am really relaxed on that aspect.”

Caulker is the newest Saints signing, and provides another quality option in Fonte’s position of centre back.

It is much needed as well with Alderweireld missing and Florin Gardos out for at least six months.

“I think he’s competition, and having a player of his calibre, a player who has represented England, shown a lot of potential, still young, is going to make the other centre backs on your toes and working harder to keep our place in the team,” reckoned Fonte.

“It’s very important we have this kind of player in the club.

“We want to move forward and for that we need competition in every place.

“I am happy we have signed him and we welcome him to the club.”

Caulker will not be available for this evening’s game, meaning Fonte is likely to play alongside Maya Yoshida.

For Fonte, who has been with Saints through their journey from League One to European football, this is a magical moment.

“It’s definitely one of the proudest moments in my career,” he reflected.

“We have been together for a long time and through all the dark, tough years, and now to be leading the team hopefully tomorrow will be a very proud moment.

“I am extremely happy and want the game to come as soon as possible.”
