HAVING been inactive in the transfer market during the early stages of the summer, Reading have completed their second signing in the space of two days, Irish international midfielder Stephen Quinn joining on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old moves to the Madejski Stadium after his contract with Hull City ran out, the midfielder having made 28 appearances in the Premier League last season.

Quinn, who has won 13 caps for Ireland, moved to England at the age of 19, signing for Sheffield United, where he made 220 starts before leaving for Hull in 2012.

In Yorkshire, Quinn helped Hull to promotion from the Championship and played a staring role as the club reached the 2013 FA Cup final.

Reading have fought off interest from a number of other suitors to tie him down to a three-year deal, with the option of a fourth year.

Reading boss Steve Clarke said: "Stephen is a player who has always caught my eye and when I knew he was available, I targeted him quite early in the summer.

"He is a talented, industrious, aggressive midfielder who can be influential in games. He is desperate to get back to the Premier League as soon as possible, which can only be good for us.

"Stephen is also a good character who will have a positive effect in our changing room and on the younger players here at Reading FC."

Quinn's signing follows a day after Reading announced the transfer of Portuguese international striker Orlando Sa.
