AFC ALDERMASTON'S first-ever trip to the Madejski Stadium ended in disappointment, as they were beaten in the final of the Berkshire Trophy Centre Senior Cup.

Aldermaston travelled to the home Championship side Reading hoping to repeat Saturday's league victory over Marlow.

However, the Thames Valley Premier League champions had other ideas and recorded a 2-1 victory to complete a league and cup double.

Marlow opened the scoring after 26 minutes from Andrew Nichol and then Oliver Flint netted what turned out to be the game winner six minutes after the break.

Aldermaston pulled a goal back thanks to Martin King's header, but they were unable to force an equaliser.

After the game, Aldermaston manager Richard Desay said: "I am very proud of what my squad has achieved this season. Despite the 2-1 narrow defeat, it was a great experience to play on that standard of pitch and all the players rose to the occasion.

"I congratulate Marlow on their victory even though we were the better footballing side, individual errors cost us two goals and we found it difficult to cope with their long ball game.

"We had numerous chances particularly in the first half, but we were unable to convert these into goals, which changed the outcome of the match."

Looking ahead to next season Desay said: "This year we have started to build a great foundation for the future. We have clear aspirations to further develop and get back into step six football in the next year or so.

"We will continue to develop the squad and attract the best players we can."
