A DRAMATIC late header from Spencer Champ saw Basingstoke and District Sunday League winners Soldiers Return beat Basingstoke Royals, their counterparts from the Saturday section, to lift the Knightsbridge Garage All Champions Cup.

The traditional end-of-season fixture, which is played to raise money for charity, took place at Winklebury on Sunday, with Soldiers Return winning 2-1.

Basingstoke Royals went into the game a favourites, having remained unbeaten throughout the season, but it was the Sunday League outfit who took an early lead.

Just 12 minutes had passed when Royals failed to clear a Warren Hill corner. The ball broke to Andrew Butler and his low shot took a wicked deflection on its way past goalkeeper Richard Munday.

James Gilham had a shot cleared off the line as Royals looked for an equaliser, and they got on terms after 20 minutes.

Tom Smith put in the perfect cross from a right-wing free-kick, allowing James Price to power a header beyond a helpless Paul Wade in the Soldiers Return goal.

Royals continued to press, but Champ did a good job of marshalling the Soldiers Return defence. The Sunday League side also looked dangerous on the break, James Galpin going close on the half-an-hour mark.

Royals almost got their noses in front before half-time, but Stephen Horton saw his effort cleared off the line by Champ and put another chance over the crossbar.

Soldiers Return caused some problems of their own after the break, Alex Izzo having one shot cleared off the line and seeing another kept out by Munday.

Both sides had further chances, with Stuart Urquhart going close for Royals and Stuart Cubbage doing the same for Soldiers Return.

The game was fairly even and looked set to end in a draw, but Soldiers Return managed to net the winner in the final minute.

Again a Hill corner caused problems, with centre-back Champ capping an excellent game by powering home a header.

The game raised £250 for Sebastian's Action Trust, this year's nominated charity.
