UNDERDOGS Alton Town were seconds away from springing a major surprise in the final of the Basingstoke Senior Cup.

The Combined Counties League outfit led Southern League Hungerford Town 2-1 in the sixth minute of added time and looked set to lift the trophy at Whitchurch United's Longmeadow ground.

However, Hungerford substitute Harry Goodger had other ideas, coming up with the latest of late equalisers to force extra-time.

The Southern League side took control in the extra period, goals from Alan O'Brien and Mark Draycott putting them 4-2 up at the interval, and while Luke Perkins completed his hat-trick to pull a goal back for Alton, Hungerford held on to win the cup for a second time.

Earlier, Matt Day gave Hungerford an early lead, but man of the match Perkins pulled Alton level just before the break.

Perkins gave the underdogs the lead on 66 minutes, but his side were just unable to hold on for a famous win.
