REPUBLIC of Chineham’s 4-3 defeat at home to Tron handed Soldiers Return the Basingstoke and District Sunday League Division One title.

Chineham went into their final game of the season knowing that even a draw in their final game would be enough to win them the title.

However, Tron had other ideas, with Ciani Thomas bagging a brace and John Sayd and David Parry also finding the net as they dashed the home side’s championship dreams, securing third place for themselves in the process.

There are still games to be played in Division Two, but UWS kept themselves in with a chance of finishing second by winning their final game of the season.

Darren Head found the net four times, with Chris Raleigh and Chris Rowe also on the scoresheet as hosts Chineham were beaten 6-2.

However, New Inn will claim second place if they are able to take four points from their remaining two games.
