READING suffered their fifth defeat on the trot as they lost at Rotherham United 2-1 on Tuesday night.

The victory for the Millers secured their Championship safety and in the process sent both Millwall and Wigan Athletic to League One.

The home side had the better of the first 45 minutes, but were unable to find a way through a resilient Royals defence.

Rotherham opened the scoring seven minutes after the break, as their top scorer Matt Derbyshire converted Danny Ward’s cross.

The Millers then doubled their advantage six minutes later, as Ward was the provider again for Lee Frecklington to score.

Reading set up a nervous finale when Oliver Norwood scored from the edge of the box, but the home side held on to make sure of Championship football next season.

The Royals wrap up their Championship campaign at play-off hopefuls Derby County on Saturday (12.15pm).

The home side will need to get at least a point to make sure of a place in the top six.
