BASINGSTOKE Royals secured the Basingstoke and District Saturday League Premier Division title thanks to a 2-0 win over Tadley Calleva A.

The hosts went into the game knowing that a win would be enough to win them the title and they took the lead after 22 minutes, Stephen Horton crossing for Ashley Taylor to head home.

Tadley hit back after the break, with Bradley Nash and Stephen Burgess both going close, but Horton converted James McIntosh’s cross to double the lead with a minute to play.

Rising Sun DC’s hopes of finishing second are all but over after they crashed to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Hook on Saturday. Jack McKee hit a hat-trick, with Tom Davies also finding the net.

Hook had been beaten 4-2 by Sherborne St John three days earlier, with Dec Shuttleworth bagging a brace, while Cobi Judd and Sachin Rai also found the net. Davies scored both of the Hook goals.

Sherborne made it a week to remember by beating Welly Old Boys 5-1 on Saturday. Steve De’ath and Shuttleworth both scored twice for Sherborne, with Ibrahim Waheed also finding the net. James Brown got Welly’s lone reply.

Basingstoke Athletic have won the Division Two title with a game to spare – but they were made to work for the three points they needed by Winklebury Wizards.

Both sides had chances in the first half, but the better ones fell to Athletic, with Matt Button hitting the crossbar and Dale Bristow failing to beat Wizards goalkeeper Gavin Alexander one-on-one.

The young Winklebury side had chances to take the lead after the break, but Robson Pereira and Charlie Smith failed to take them.

They were made to pay in the last minute, when a poor clearance resulted in Michael Borbely firing home to end a penalty-area scramble, giving Athletic a 1-0 win.

Basingstoke Labour Club are assured of second place, while Bounty United saw their game against Sherborne St John Reserves called off as their opponents were unable to raise a team.

Goals from Tom Hartley and Joe Hill, both created by Ash Pearce, gave Basingstoke United a 2-0 win over Preston Candover.
