A ROBBER who stole a four-figure sum from a bookmakers may have been armed, police have said.

Officers are now hunting the thug who threatened a male member of staff from William Hill bookmakers in Manse Road, Newmains, as he went to deposit cash.

The robber then made off along Manse Road and down a lane near to the Spar store and Tandoori Palace, towards Main Street, after the incident which happened at 2.50pm on Monday.

Police described the male culprit as in his early to mid 30s, 5ft 8in tall with a slim build. He was wearing a dark-coloured beanie hat, a dark blue or grey tracksuit top, light grey jogging trousers, and had scruffy dark hair and a scruffy appearance.

It is believed the robber was carrying a weapon.

The staff member was uninjured but badly shaken as a result of the robbery.

Detective Sergeant Craig Hosie said: "I would appeal to anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in or around the area of the bookmakers in Manse Road or Main Street or anyone with information that may assist police enquiries to contact Wishaw Police on 01698 202 600."
