MOTHERWELL'S Caroline Brown became the first Scot to win the engage Women's World Matchplay Bowls Championship at Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk.

The 26-year-old was on fire in the repeat of the 2005 final against England's Ellen Falkner. After winning the first set by a five-shot margin and quickly establishing a 9-0 lead in the second, Brown eventually recorded a 9-4, 10-5 victory to win the title.

"I'm absolutely delighted," said the medical secretary from the Blantyre Club.

"I'm just so happy with the way I've played for the last few days - but all the way through the game, I knew Ellen could come back.

"It's brilliant to be the first Scot to win this title," added Brown.

But another Scot crashed out in the men's third round, when sixth seed Paul Foster lost 5-7, 5-9 to local favourite Jamie Chestney.

In the last match of the day, the near capacity crowd saw a stunning match when Chestney, a 20-year-old qualifier from nearby Fakenham in Norfolk, outplayed experienced Scot Foster, the three-times former world champion.

Troon's Foster led 2-0 after the first two ends and held two shots in the third when Chestney played a lucky shot which gave the underdog a two to draw level.

"I started brilliantly and could easily have gone 5-0 up," said Foster.

"But the game completely changed after that third end - and he didn't give me a chance thereafter."
