THE FA are facing a revolt after top bosses backed the scrapping of England friendlies.

England No 2 Terry Venables claimed after last week's 1-0 defeat to Spain that squad get-togethers would be more constructive.

And that view has been backed by League Managers' Association chief John Barnwell, who says his members would be happier to release players without the threat of injury.

However, the FA need friendlies to finance the new Wembley and will be vehemently opposed to the bosses' view.

Barnwell said: "Having longer periods in training camps instead of friendlies seems an obvious improvement.

"It reduces the risk of players returning injured or exhausted. The 20 Premiership managers put this to the FA four years ago but there was very little support."
