A thug who dragged a terrified pensioner along a busy road and robbed her of her handbag faces a lengthy jail term.

Pensioner Mary Barr, 75, of Airdrie, Lanarkshire, screamed for help when thief Christopher Clark grabbed her bag.

When she held on to it, he pulled her to the ground and dragged her for almost 20 yards along the roadside in High Street, Airdrie.

The town's sheriff court heard Mrs Barr was making her way home from church with her friend Isobel McLaghlan, 70, on October 1 last year when the attack happened.

A passer-by saw Mrs Barr on the ground and chased after Clark who jumped back into a car driven by friends shouting "drive, drive".

The car drove off but the registration number was noted by off-duty police officer Gillian McKay. The owners were traced and Clark arrested.

The bag was never recovered. It contained a purse with £135 in cash.

Clark, 25, of Airdrie, pleaded guilty to the attack and Sheriff Alfred Vannet deferred sentence until next month for background reports. Clark was remanded in custody.
