TRANSPORT chiefs have been warned that congestion charges for motorists in Glasgow could drive people from the city centre.

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce said Strathclyde Partnership for Transport's suggestion could have a "negative impact" on business life.

A consultation paper launched by SPT last week said that, as congestion was not going away, some form of road user charge was inevitable.

The Chamber said it welcomed a transport strategy which addressed issues like the Glasgow Airport rail link and the East End Regeneration Route.

It also recognised the importance of a travel network in the 2014 Commonwealth Games bid and the super-casino application.

But the Chamber's chief executive Lesley Sawers said: "Further investigation is needed into measures such as congestion charging and how that could address the city's transport problems.

"We would need to ensure any solution put into place would not have a negative impact on the city's economy by making the city centre difficult or expensive to access."
