RANGERS captain Gavin Rae is well aware changes will take place at Ibrox once the new manager arrives.

Rae admits his side blew their chance to impress the new boss when they were sent crashing out of the Tennent's Scottish Cup by Dunfermline.

Walter Smith - along with Ally McCoist - is expected to be unveiled this week, after the SFA confirmed they had received an approach from Rangers for the Scotland manager.

The former Gers boss is likely to swing the axe when he takes over, in a bid to replicate the success he enjoyed at Ibrox the first time around in the 1990s.

Rae concedes few players showed they deserve to have a future at Rangers on the basis of their 3-2 defeat at Dunfermline.

"There is a new manager coming in, and everyone wanted to impress," he said.

"But we certainly didn't do that today and we can't blame anyone but ourselves."

Rae is hoping the change of guard has the desired effect quickly.

"I certainly hope someone comes in and takes us forward," he said.

"We need to get the team going again and get back to where we should be."

Rae believes the events of the last seven days could have played a part at East End Park.

He said: "We didn't start well at all, and there was a bit of nervousness about us - I don't know why.

"Everyone was confident going into the game, but these things happen.

"Maybe it had something to do with events this week, but we can't use that as an excuse.

"We need to rise above it and get on with it - and we didn't do that."

Rae insists there are no hard feelings between him and Ferguson, after caretaker boss Ian Durrant asked him to wear the captain's armband at Dunfermline.

He said: "Barry has been fine about it, along with the rest of the players.

"Ian Durrant asked me to do it, and there was no problem.

"Maybe it takes a bit of pressure off Barry and lets him relax and get on with his football.

"I'm just gutted to captain the team in a defeat." Rangers should hear today the result of tests on Andy Webster.

The 24-year-old joined on loan until the end of the season from Wigan on Friday and injured a knee in his first training session.

Reports suggested the former Hearts man could be out until mid-February, but the damage will be clearer today.
