THE Rangers Supporters' Assembly is backing Walter Smith to make an immediate impact.

The Scotland manager's switch from Hampden to Ibrox has split fans both at club and international level, but Assembly president Jim Templeton says it's a good move.

"I think he'll be welcomed back with open arms," Templeton said.

"You will never please all fans but the vast majority will be delighted to have Walter back.

"The first thing he will bring is stability and organisation, both of which appear to have been non-existent at times this season, and he also brings his knowledge of Rangers Football Club. Walter is a man steeped in club traditions."

The SFA plan to take legal action against both Rangers and Smith, after he gave up his job as national team head coach to return to club football.

Templeton said: "I'm not concerned by that but I do find it very strange. I'm not sure what the SFA are up to. They might at least understand why he wants to go and be grateful for what he has achieved, rather than pursue legal action. I don't think it will affect Walter, though. That will be handled by the powers-that-be.

"The SFA didn't seem in any rush to extend his contract but suddenly can't do without him."

Defender Julien Rodriguez is a medical and a signature away from completing a free transfer move to Marseille, and there will be more arrivals and departures before the end of the month.

"Walter obviously has lots of rebuilding to do," added Templeton. "Anyone who has been present at the majority of Rangers games this season will realise that."
