AN urgent upgrade of the A77 has been demanded after figures showed 26 people died in crashes in the past seven years.
Central Scotland MSP Alex Neil said the Glasgow to Stranraer road had a "shocking" accident record.
Between 1999 and 2005 there have been 128 accidents on the road - most between Ayr and Stranraer - causing 26 deaths.
Mr Neil said: "That there could be 26 fatalities on that road just between 1999 and 2005 is quite appalling, and it is clear improvements have to be made to make it safer.
"I believe that the Scottish Executive has to look at this as a matter of some priority.
"The A77 is a vital arterial route.
"Many people simply have to use this road. It is only right that it is made as safe as is possible for them to do so."
