FIFA today confirmed they are poring over Andy Webster's complex loan move from Wigan to Rangers.

The defender - who is out injured for the next five weeks with a knee problem - has been caught up in mountains of red tape which could scupper his hopes of turning out in Light Blue, as he has still to be registered with the SFA.

Hearts still hold the player's registration as they await Fifa's decision on what compensation the Premiership side must pay for the 24-year-old.

Webster left Hearts last summer after taking advantage of article 17 of Fifa regulations which permitted him to walk out 12 months before the end of a four-year contract, providing he moved to another country.

Fifa granted international clearance to allow Webster to play for Wigan. But the waters have been muddied further by the Scotland man's swift return to the SPL just six months after he left.

"We can confirm we have been contacted by the SFA over the possibility of registering Andy Webster for Rangers," a Fifa spokesman confirmed. "And we are currently in the process of discussing all the relevant information.

"We are not in a position to comment further until the Fifa players' status department have had a chance to analyse all that relevant information."
