SCOTLAND boss George Burley is hoping to welcome back Celtic captain Stephen McManus for the must-win World Cup qualifier with Iceland on Wednesday.

The centre-half missed the 3-0 defeat to Holland in the Amsterdam Arena on Saturday night after suffering an ankle injury in training with the Hoops.

However, McManus re-joined the national squad at their training base at Loch Lomond this morning and Burley is hopeful he will be fit for Hampden.

Scotland need to pick up all three points against Iceland if they are to have any chance of qualifying for the World Cup Finals in South Africa.

Assistant manager Terry Butcher said: "Stephen is back with us and is desperate to play. He is a very experienced player and if he is fit he will be able to handle playing in this match.

"His daughter was born last week, but he is desperate to be a part of this game. I think that shows the team spirit we have in the Scotland camp."

Butcher also revealed that Spurs right-back Alan Hutton, who came on in the second half against Holland, should be fit for the crunch Group Nine showdown.

He added: "Alan felt it after playing for 20 or 30 minutes against such good opposition in such a high tempo match, but he is also hoping to be fit."

However, Derby County forward Kris Commons, who Burley had hoped would be available for this midweek game, will not come into the reckoning.

Butcher stated: "Kris won't be fit. He hasn't taken part in any competitive football with Derby as he has been recovering from a calf injury.

"He tried to step it up over the weekend, but it didn't happen for him."
