SCOTLAND wing Thom Evans has dismissed suggestions that the Murrayfield clash with Italy a week on Saturday will be a wooden spoon decider.

The Glasgow Warriors flyer scored his first try for Frank Hadden's side in the 22-13 defeat in France as he capped a superb performance.

Evans says that has given the team a platform, if not a result, to beat the Azzurri and end the RBS Six Nations campaign with a three-game winning run.

He said: "Maybe we didn't get the result we wanted but we gave a performance that was much improved on the Welsh game.

"The fact that the Stade de France was like a cauldron with all the noise of the French support before the game and then for most of it all we could hear was their fans booing their team tells a story.

"Now we have a chance to take stock and go into the Italy game determined to put it all together.

"But although we are frustrated, we also believe that with Italy then Ireland at home in our next two games we have the chance to build on this performance with two home wins that would take us to Twickenham with real momentum and the chance to win the Calcutta Cup."

Evans added: "Italy will be no pushovers but we showed enough against the French to suggest we are very close to putting a big performance together.

"There is no way we are looking at this as a wooden spoon decider."

The 23-year-old admitted his delight at scoring his first try for Scotland and said: "It was my fourth cap and I was beginning to wonder if the try would ever come.

"But it was a great pass from Phil Godman and I happened to run the correct line and things opened up for me.

"It is a moment I will always treasure."

Scotland coach Frank Hadden said: "I feel we're ahead of where we were last year and I expect us to make a big impact in the next few games."
