THE hunt is on to find the man to fill one of the most important jobs in the Scottish game, fronting the new-look SPL.

As executive chairman Lex Gold steps back from the firing line, the SPL are looking for a chief executive to help drive forward the much-criticised body. With approval now given to invite SFL clubs to join SPL2 - if the clubs decide to push ahead with the proposal - it is a crucial stage in the league's development.

Since Roger Mitchell stepped down seven years ago, the post of chief executive has remained vacant.

Gold has acted as front man in the organisation and steered them through many controversial battles. But, at 68 he has decided the time is right for him to step back and allow someone else to take up the day-to-day running of the SPL.

The SFA broke with tradition when they appointed former player, and pundit Gordon Smith as their chief executive in 2007 after David Taylor moved to Uefa.

Stewart Thompson, who was commercial director of the SPL before moving to a similar position with the Football League in England was approached to return, but he has rejected the offer.

Iain Blair will remain as director of operations.
