ALLY McCOIST today insisted Kris Boyd was right to turn down the chance to move away from Rangers.

Boyd snubbed the opportunity to move to Coca-Cola Championship club Birmingham City earlier this month after the Gers agreed a £3.75million fee.

And Ibrox assistant boss Ally, who has taken the prolific hitman under his wing, reckons Kris was entitled to stay with his boyhood heroes.

The Light Blues legend turned down the chance to move on when Graeme Souness was in charge back in the 1980s.

He said: "I can understand why Kris doesn't want to leave. Not only that, he's well within his rights.

"He signed a contract so make no mistake about that. I can't speak for Kris, but from my point of view I was never going anywhere.

"The only way I was leaving was if it was on my own terms. By that I mean I was never leaving as a failure.

"I was always going to score goals to prove to myself I could do it. There were rumours I was going to be sold.

"But all I ever wanted to do was score goals for Rangers. Nothing was going to stop me doing that.

"I had 15 years as the centre forward for Rangers and consider myself the luckiest man alive. I experienced things other boys can only dream about."

McCoist endured a frosty relationship with Souness during the Scotland legend's time in charge at Rangers.

But the Ibrox club's greatest ever goalscorer revealed he can see the former Liverpool man's point of view now he is in the dug out himself.

He stated: "I had ups and downs, like falling out with Souness, but the funny thing is that I can see where he was coming from.

"I get on great with him now and don't have any doubts that whatever he did to me was for the benefit of the club."
